Hey Bob, I’ve recently moved to a new high school that has a very strong emphasis on the arts, especially music. One of my teachers want me to memorize 5 tunes every week and its been stressing me out. Every time I memorize a tune its seems like the next day it disappears and its been very frustrating. I know that you like to take more time to transcribe the tune and work on it but I can only transcribe the melody and not the changes. Do you have any advice? Thank you so much. I can learn the melodies fine and they stick but I forget the changes too easily.

This is a common problem for sax players. Was for me. Solution: learn the changes. The same way a piano/guitar/bass player would. Be the rhythm section. Stop thinking of yourself as a melody-only player. Also, in my opinion 5 tunes a week is too many to memorize. They most certainly will be gone next week. The secret is in repitition and consistency.
