Success is doing what you said you were going to do

"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." - Lao Tzu

Execution. It’s a word that’s been on my mind a lot lately.

I told myself I was going to post something to my blog for weeks. Seems there’s always something else that needs my attention. Or, I just haven’t got the perfect idea of what to say.

I just came from a meeting with a prolific Hollywood producer/director. This guy does stuff. He says he’s going to do it and then he does it.

Wow. What a concept. Do that enough times and you have a career. At the very least (most?) you have a reputation.

I said I was going to post something to my blog today. But all the little voices held me back.

I watched an amazing video of a young John Mayer the other day. It was from before, during, and immediately following his early rise to fame.

He said something that stuck with me:

“Success is really about that you said you were going to do something and you actually did it.” – John Mayer (see ~4:30 in the video below)

Sometimes it’s a big thing, but more often it’s the little things. Or at least they seem little. So little that it’s easy to tell ourselves it’s no big deal if we don’t do them this time. Oh, I don’t need to exercise today, I’ll just do it tomorrow.

I often stop myself from writing something on my blog because I convince myself I’m not a writer. Not of words, anyway. Or I don’t know what “category” an idea should be labeled so I forgo posting it. Silly, right?

Maybe no one reads this. Ever. But I told myself I would do it so I’m doing it.

What about you? Are you doing what you said you were going to do?

I met up with Jason on a recent trip to New York and we talked for over an hour in the studio where I was mixing the new album.

We discussed time feel, Branford Marsalis, John Mayer, playing with and for (vs. against) audiences, and more.

- Don’t call a Ferrari repairman to fix your toilet
- Playing clean and looking for the pretty notes
- What I look for in drummers
- Pocket
- How to have a musical conversation with an audience

Jason has over 340 interviews with jazz musicians on his website. Check it out here.
