Saxophonist Bob Reynolds’ fifth album as a leader, Somewhere in Between, is a seamless and fearless blend of jazz, blues, rock and pop. It features Reynolds’ compositions alongside covers of indie-pop and alt-rock favorites, with rock superstar John Mayer on two tracks. The album shows off Reynolds’ genre-blending abilities and also his commitment to going his own way. Released with no record label, publicist, radio promoter or tour, Somewhere In Between debuted at #1 on the iTunes Jazz Chart and in the top 100 of all iTunes releases on that same day.
Reynolds is enthusiastic about his independent approach: “I get to make whatever music I want with whomever I choose. I don’t have anyone telling me to make radio edits, use certain ‘marquee’ players, or which tunes to play.”

The album, his fifth as a leader, features jazz heavyweights Eric Harland on drums and Aaron Parks on piano, along with keyboardist Oli Rockberger (of Mister Barrington), bassist Janek Gwizdala, guitarist John Shannon, and percussionist Bashiri Johnson. Mayer plays on the first single, “Feedback,” and also on “The Beginning.”
Reynolds is a rare saxophonist who’s as comfortable in an arena full of rock fans as in an intimate jazz club. He spent years touring the world in Mayer’s band, winning new fans with his solos on crowd favorites like “Vultures,” “Wheel,” “Gravity” and “Covered in Rain.” His partnership with Mayer reminds many of Sting’s collaborations with Branford Marsalis in the 1980s. Both men are big fans of that band.
Reynolds has recorded and performed with everyone from Usher, Josh Groban and the Jonas Brothers to Amos Lee, Willie Nelson and Nellie McKay. He calls himself a “melody architect” and refuses to be boxed in by conventional genre labels. A child of the 80s, his music is a blend of his early influences (Sting, Bruce Hornsby, Tears for Fears), R&B and soul (Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder), and jazz (Stan Getz, Joshua Redman, Chris Potter).
Reynolds has been on this path his entire life: “My love affair with writing and playing music began as a 13 year-old and I’ve chased the same dream for more than 20 years: to join the ranks of musicians I admire and make outstanding music, with the best collaborators, at the highest level.” It’s more than just a dream. With Somewhere in Between, Bob Reynolds is proving that he can turn his dreams into reality.
