By the way, I absolutely love the video. It makes me bounce up and down the room every time I see it. Amazing stuff!
I have a question though: do you have any special technique of getting to the level of concentration you need to really focus on making music instead of playing a good groove/ the right notes/ showing off etc.? Is it just a question of experience? Or a state of mind? Thanks!

Lot’s of slow, diligent practice. If you rush things when you practice, or are concerned with velocity (playing fast and flashy) you will end up playing in a state of anxiety. It will sound nervous. It’s not easy, but learning to take your time and pace yourself is one of the most important things you can learn to do as an improviser (imo).

Hey Bob, Great video! You asked for great practice tips. I really like the instructional videos from Victor Wooten on practicing with a metronome. His Groove Workshop DVD’s are great, even, and maybe especially for us non bass players. This is a short Korg video, but the workshop stuff is even better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9X1fhVLVF_4

Yup. What he said. 😉

Wicked version of this tune! My favorite way to learn how to do this stuff is to just jam along with a great recording such as this, just keep it simple and focus on groovin then add complexity once I lock in to the feel a bit. I feel like I get better just from watching you guys go to work!
