I always find these live “talking to my computer” webcasts daunting and there is no possible way I could get through all the music I wanted to share with you in an hour, but I think we got to some good stuff!

I mentioned a few blog posts and videos which I’ll list below. I’m also sharing the Spotify playlist I created for the event but please note there are at least 20 tracks not showing in this player (guess the player maxes out at 100 tracks).

I played and toured for several years (’99-’05) with Jonah Smith and during that time the Redman that was on my mind was his contributions to MeShell’s albums. See if you notice any similarities. 🙂

Here’s a clip of his “Moodswing” band that was so influential on me. I was a couple years into playing tenor and this group just floored me. Still does. Enjoy!

Limitations, interaction, and building something together – Vlog 168

This is my Vlog about the Moodswing band reunion (2020) that Warner Music blocked from YouTube:

Here’s Josh—and some other heavy hitters—discussing influences:

A 7-minute a cappella introduction that demos one of many things Josh is so great at (and the rest of the solos are INCREDIBLE, too). The way these guys play together is astonishing.

This is more recent, so doesn’t fall under the heading of “stuff that influenced me in my teens,” but holy smokes…

Finally, someone asked in the webcast about developing rhythmic abilities as a soloist. I gave a quick example, but we get into topics like this week after week, month after month in my Virtual Studio.
