*If you’re in LA, my band performs soon
I’m listening to
Pat Metheny talk about his INCREDIBLE album, Secret Story. This album has inspired me since I first heard it over 15 years ago. Hearing Pat describe all the details he finds noteworthy is AWESOME! I especially like ~13 mins where he speaks to the unique challenge of recording overdubbed solos. Someone hipped me to this when I posted a video of me playing along to one of my favorite Metheny songs and solos from this album, a track called “See The World.” Check out what he says ~23 mins in reference to that song, and the challenges he set for himself writing for the Pat Metheny Group.
Get Secret Story. (Seriously, you want this album in your life.)
Want to be an artist? Watch Groundhog Day. Great article by Austin Kleon. You should read the whole thing but here are a couple favorite parts:
The creative journey is not one in which at the end you wake up in some mythical, happy, foreign land. The creative journey is one in which you wake up every day, like Phil, with more work to do.
“If one becomes a lawyer, scholar, mechanist, typist, scientist, production assistant, or what-have-you, the world will commend your decision. Each day at lunch, on vacation, or at whatever party you attend, your choice will be applauded, upheld, and affirmed. And you will know what is expected of you. Even if your job is difficult?–?if you are a brain chemist, international death merchant, or rocket designer?–?your responsibilities will be obvious and your goals concrete. If you achieve them, you may be rewarded by promotion. If you fail, you might be fired or demoted, but nonetheless?–?unless your boss is insane?–?the job will have tangible parameters. [Art], however, is different. You will never know exactly what you must do, it will never be enough… no matter what change you achieve, you will most likely see no dividend from it. And even after you have achieved greatness, the [tiny number of people] who even noticed will ask, ‘What next?’”

Aziz Ansari on Quitting the Internet. Great interview in GQ. (Pair with my app recommendation below) And if you haven’t seen his brilliant Netflix series, check out Master of None — especially season 2!
Moment — an app that automatically tracks your daily phone usage. Get ready to be shockingly surprised. Their tagline is: Put down your phone and get back to your life. I found it tough to get below 2 hours per day. Yikes!
At the Baked Potato in Los Angeles on Thursday, November 2nd. Two sets at 9:30 & 11:15. Advance tickets recommended; the first set has been selling out. Get tickets here
A couple new vlogs (been busy getting my Virtual Studio ready to reopen and traveling but more vlogs coming soon!)
Episode 124: Jazz Practice Buddy
(I turn 40 in that one!)
Episode 125: What’s #pocket?
The Vietnam War, a film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. We’re slowly making our way through this 10-episode, 18-hour-long masterpiece. It’s incredible. It took them 10 years to make. My dad fought in Vietnam and even after watching the first episode twice he commented: “I still don’t understand why we were there.”
Heavy-duty viewing, but so educational.
That’s it for this month!
Hugs and high fives,
